Big Agnes Big House 4 Tent: 4-Person 3-Season

Big Agnes Big House 4 Tent: 4-Person 3-Season

I've used this tent for 2 seasons and it has been fantastic. I set up the tent on my own without any problems. The sturdy 3 pole design does a great job of keeping the tent from collapsing in strong wind gusts as long as it's staked down properly. We easily get 4 people in the tent with room for gear. I primarily use this tent for car camping with the family. If you're looking for a backpacking tent, look elsewhere because this would take up most of the room in your pack. If you divide the tent amongst many backpackers you should have no problems. The poles are aluminum and light. The fly can stay on with the sides rolled up for ventilation. The doors are large but can be difficult to zip open and close, this really didn't bother me though. My only complaint is that the bottom of the door to the ground is about 8 inches and can be somewhat of a tripping hazard. I bought this tent because it had a squarish mostly usable floor and a relatively high dome because I'm tall and appreciate a little extra head room. Buy one and you won't be disappointed. The 4 person REI tent is junk by the way if you're considering it. The big agnes has a full fly while the REI fly was not unless they changed their design on it. A full fly will keep the wind gusts from creating a tornado in your tent and keep you dry when it rains.

Coleman Hooligan 4 Tent

Coleman Hooligan 4 Tent

Overall this is a good tent, but I found out the hard way that the tent isn't waterproof. There is a basic problem in the maufacturing of the tent fly. The fly itself is well constructed and the seams are sealed, but after the seams are sealed they stitch on the velcro tabs which hold the fly to the tent poles. When they stitch the velcro on, they don't reseal the stitching, so it leaks. Their "guaranteed waterproof" doesn't help much miles from the car in a downpour at midnight. I've sealed the seams myself now, so we'll see if it helps.
Beyond that, the overall set up is easy and logical. There are two main poles that cross to support the tent, and another pole across the front to support the vestibule. It's important to note that the tent without the fly is all mesh, so you can't use the tent by itself unless you don't need ANY privacy. I was orginally skeptical of the vestibule design, but after a few trips I've come to like it. It lets me keep the dirty and wet gear outside, which keeps things cleaner inside. I'm a big guy, so it's a little bit of a pain to duck under the vestibule to go in the tent. The floor seems solid, and the overall material seems more durable than some other coleman tents, such as the Sundome. There is a vent at the top rear of the tent, but it seems like a place to let water and bugs in. The interior space of the tent is good, but you can tell that from the 9x7 footprint. Another feature I would have liked is to have staps to hang a lantern in the top of the tent.
Assuming my sealer keeps the tent dry, I'll continue to use it, becuase of the good interior space, but there is real room for improvement in this tent.

Kelty Trail Ridge 4 Person Tent

Kelty Trail Ridge 4 Person Tent

Purchased this tent from Amazon for an excellent price. Just put it on my wishlist, and watched the price drop as I waited my camping plans to firm up. This is my first camping experience since Boy Scout camping, and going out west with my parents when I was a child. Man, how things have changed. This tent is extremely easy to set up and extremely light. I set it up in my family room first time in about 8 minutes. We took it to southern Missouri, and stayed in it for 5 nights. It was just my wife and I, so we used 2 camp cots. Lots of room, with extra space for moving around, dressing, etc......The tent is extremely dry, and withstood a level 5 TRW (thunderstorm), with no trouble at all. Not one leak, or even any dampness inside of tent, good ventilation even with rain fly on.
We used a carpet remnant as a floor protector, and it made it nice and cozy. Construction of this tent is superb. I will have this tent for a long time.

Kelty Gunnison 2.1

Kelty Gunnison 2.1

Bought a Kelty Gunnison 2.1 because it was on sale and I've had good luck with Kelty gear in the past. On our second outing with the tent we encountered a severe summer storm. For about 24 hours we were pounded by incredible strong gusts of wind, sheets of rain, and dime size hail. We were camped on a rock bluff at 8,300 feet, totally exposed to the storm. After 8 hours of the storm the couple we backpacked with had to move to our tent as the wind started to tear theirs apart. Their were four of us in the "cabin" part of the tent and nearly all of our gear in the side storage area. At some parts of the night the wind got so strong that the walls of our tent were bent over on top of us. I couldn't believe that the poles could handle that kind of pressure. In the morning our tent was still standing and the other tent was ripped and broken beyond repair. We never did find some parts of their tent. Ours was still standing like new, both us and our gear were still dry. The only thing that was damaged by the storm were the tent stakes that bent by the force of the wind. Amazing tent. If your considering purchasing this tent, I suggest you do so. I will never buy another tent that isn't a Kelty.

TETON Sports Outfitter XXL Quick Tent

TETON Sports Outfitter XXL Quick Tent

This is an extremely lightweight, easy setup one person tent that has the added versatility of fitting on the OutFitter XXL Canopy from Teton or by itself. I would not recomend it for winter camping but for spring, summer, and even fall, or as an emergency shelter in a survival pack it is an excellent option since it comes with a compact travel bag that will easily fit on any pack or over the shoulder. It comes with straps and stakes, which I would replace for larger stakes, but that is not necessary and does not necessarily deter from the package. Glad I got it and at a great price!

Wenzel Pine Ridge 10-by-8 Foot Four-to-Five-Person 2-Room Dome Tent

Wenzel Pine Ridge 10-by-8 Foot Four-to-Five-Person 2-Room Dome Tent

The tent itself is very nice. It is easy to setup with a minimum of 2 people. It is very roomy inside. I had three male adults in the tent and it was very comfortable. 3 average size male adults is very comfortable for this tent. 4 average size male adults would be just right. Overall, it is a very nice tent. Enjoyed my two weekends (4 nights) camping in this tent. It also held up well in light to medium rain. Haven't been able to test it for heavier rain yet.

The only downside is that there does seem to be a zipper problem. If you open the tent too fast or even normal speed it seems to get caught on the orange part which protects the zippers and keeps out moisture I presume. It didn't get stuck to the point where I couldn't take it out, but nevertheless, it does seem to be annoying. However, if you go slower opening the tent and mindful of that the orange part can get stuck, then this problem can be overlooked in my opinion.

Coleman Fiberglass Tent Pole Replacement Kit

Coleman Fiberglass Tent Pole Replacement Kit

I measured my poles and this kit appeared to provide an exact replacement for one of my poles. unfortunately their pole measurements do not include the metal tips and mine did. So measure to the little bump in your metal tip to get the correct length.
I didn't have glue to hold the new metal tip on, so I squeezed it down slightly with pliers to make a tight fit - don't oversquish it! And I used another reviewers tip to cut the fiberglass pole by putting it in a drill and rotating it against the hacksaw - worked GREAT!
It is nice to have a new shockcord, I found the tool to thread it through very sturdy and helpful, I will take advantage of it by getting new shockcord for the other poles, since mine have extra length on them which makes it tough to thread the poles together. I thought their instructions for cutting the shockcord to length made it too short and tight, which probably help is putting the poles together but will make the shockcord fail faster. I made mine quite a bit longer - still stretched but not so much.

Kelty Salida 2 Tent - 2 Person/3 Season

Kelty Salida 2 Tent - 2 Person/3 Season

My new Salida 2 got a workout on the first use this weekend with the Boy Scouts. My Webelos son was a guest of the troop and slept in one of their tents, while my younger son & I slept in in the Salida. It rained all day & night Saturday, into Sunday morning. Not everyone else slept wet, but most did. The troop tents are complicated to set up correctly and, consequently, only two of their tents didn't let at least some rain in. The Salida 2 was a breeze to set up. Malcolm & I were comfortable & dry. There was not much room for our gear, but we didn't bring much. If two adults were using the tent there would be virtually no room for gear inside. The design of the rain fly is good, but not perfect. If the wind had been blowing the opposite direction rain may have entered from the back. The fly is pulled away from the tent and reaches the ground on the front & sides, but not on the back. I had to use some twine to pull the fly away from the rear of the tent, and there were several inches of space between the fly & ground. As with the Kelty Crestone 1, air circulated well without allowing in rain.

Wenzel Ridgeline 7 X 7-Feet Three-Person Dome Tent

Wenzel Ridgeline 7 X 7-Feet Three-Person Dome Tent

My family does a lot of camping in a trailer and the kids like to sleep in tents. We've been through a lot of tents over the years, and have chosen progressively smaller tents each time. This tent has everything that's important to me: a strong tub floor, two-pole assembly that the kids can do themselves, low profile so it won't blow over as easily, good zippers, and fits a queen size air mattress that two people can share. I was surprised and pleased by the fly's two mini-poles that fit horizontally over both windows to form little awnings. This tent is not just for the kids, though - I plan on using it myself. I'm happy to have found a good, simple tent that has everything I need.

Wenzel Sprout 6 X 5-Feet Two-Person Children's Dome Tent

Wenzel Sprout 6 X 5-Feet Two-Person Children's Dome Tent

I bought this tent for my grandkids who are 5 years and 3 years. They absolutely LOVE it. We pitched it in the yard for the morning and they didn't want to come out. As the day heated up, we moved it inside to the basement, and they spent most of the day in it! It is a nice size tent ( my 31 year old daughter fit in there with them for awhile.) it seems sturdy and well made. The kids liked the ability to open or close the window on the side, in the top and door, or they could zip it all up. A great buy!!

This tent was perfect! I purchased this for camping. We like to keep our food away from the squirrels and the what ever wild animal that might come along for a midnight snack. Ii don't know about you but I don' want any critters on my food. The tent is the perfect size for my needs. It has a back zippered window with ties inside the back wall. The door zips in a letter "D" SHAPE which is awesome. It was super easy to assemble and put away. It came with a storage bag and a smaller storage bag for the stakes. One more thing it comes with a small cover for the top of the roof incase it rains, I did get some rain over the labor day weekend while camping and nothing got wet which was a good way to test my tent.

Coleman Rainfly for Coleman 8-Person Instant Tent

Coleman Rainfly for Coleman 8-Person Instant Tent

I purchased this rainfly to go with the associated tent (Coleman product number 2000007832) and it worked great. Since the tent has 'external' poles, it's a good idea to put this on to keep them clean even if it is not raining. The rainfly snaps onto the poles of the tent, so there is no need to tie it down unless it is going to be windy. It took a minute or so to put on the tent, so I'll use it every time I use the tent. One caution, the rainfly does not fully extend to cover the door zipper, so if you are going in and out while it is raining, water may get in the tent.

Coleman Montana 8 Tent

Coleman Montana 8 Tent

Bought this tent for a two-week camping trip to Canada for two adults and two large dogs. We put a queen-size air mattress in one end of the tent and used the other side for luggage, dressing, storing chairs, etc. Dogs slept in the middle. Very comfortable, very good ventilation. Had plenty of room and privacy. Followed the directions and it was easy to set up. Door is fantastic - so much better than regular zip doors. It rained four days of our trip -- big downpours and very windy. As long as objects did not push up against the inside walls of the tent, then things stayed dry. This was the best purchase we made all summer and I can't wait to take it out next year!

Coleman Sundome 3-Person Tent

Coleman Sundome 3-Person Tent

This tent is good for the price, but 'ware the rain! The moment I got the tent, I sealed all the seams thoroughly, then packed it up for a weekend trip. It rained all weekend, and at first I was quite pleased to be one of two people in the group to have a dry tent. That first night there was some condensation on the tent walls, but nothing to complain about. The second night, however, sure showed me. It didn't outright pour, but it did rain steadily all night, and I woke up during the night to find myself soaked. The seams didn't leak - the water came right through the fabric of the tent. The floor/tub remained waterproof, but the siding needs some significant waterproofing to make it through a rainy night.

Other than the rain problem, this tent performed admirably. The zippers were waterproof, despite having been packed in such a way that the flap over the door's zipper tended to stick straight out. The ventilation was good without being terribly breezy. There's plenty of room in all directions, and it was easy to move around and change inside. Setup and takedown were a breeze, even by myself in the rain! (Just drape the fly over the top to cover the mesh.)

I don't regret buying this tent, but I won't be taking it out for a wet weekend again. Curling up in a soaked sleeping bag was more character-building than I was prepared for!

Wenzel Alpine 8.5 X 8-Feet Dome Tent

Wenzel Alpine 8.5 X 8-Feet Dome Tent

So I took my tent out for a bachelor party weekend for my future brother in law back in March 2010 for a long weekend. Thankfully, I had the foresight to do a trial run to work out how to put the tent together because this was my first 5 sided tent. Setup was a breeze!!! Only problem I had was putting the rain cover on because I put it on facing the wrong way. It did better than expected because I set up my tent on wet ground and never felt wet the whole time. No moisture got in which is awesome when it got down to the 30s and I stayed dry. I have had a Wenzel sleeping bag for at least 15 years which is why I went with them for this tent. I will definitely use them again!

The Third Wheel

The Third Wheel

That "effin" Flowers, as both his friends and his enemies refer to him, is back in a superior police procedural/thriller from John Sandford. This novel is much darker than Sanford's previous books. For one thing, the lines between the good guys and the bad guys are not as sharply drawn. Things are not all black and white. It will perhaps leave you, as it did Flowers (and me) questioning some serious moral truths about the nature and shape of justice. Flowers ends up taking a position on this issue which you may or may not agree with depending on your own views. Everything is resolved in the end but Flowers has to make some choices which leave him unhappy. Flowers' boss Lucas Davenport and his two co-workers Shrake and Jenkins are back to help him out and it is interesting to get a view of Davenport different from how he presents himself in his own series of novels. Along the way we meet a new character, Sheriff Duke, who I hope either Davenport or Flowers will run into again. I downloaded my copy at midnight and ended up not being able to put it down. This is a great read.

The Mark of Athena

The Mark of Athena

I love all of Rick Riordan's books. I am disappointed that this book crashes the Kindle Fire. I thought I was alone last night with this issue but I see that there have been more people with bad files reporting crashes. I have read numerous books on the Kindle Fire and this is the first one that has crashed my Kindle. I got to around chapter 25 and 4 pages in the application crashed back to the home screen. I contacted Customer Service and was informed that the book would be removed from the Kindle store and the publisher would be contacted to get the issue corrected however it will take at least a week before this happens. Hopefully it will be resolved soon so I can continue reading this wonderful book.

Hidden (House of Night)

Hidden (House of Night)

This is an improvement over the last few House of Night books. I am home sick and was looking for something to read, and this popped up from Amazon. I truly did not even care about this series anymore after the last 2 or 3 books, they just seemed to be fillers, and absolutely no fun to read IMO. The adult characters were a relief in Hidden, finally no more just absolute nonsense surrounding Neferet. I was over hearing about her fooling the whole world after book five, and I felt that it was dragged on to the point that this series was just ridiculous and worse, boring. In Hidden we finally get to move on, and it is enjoyable! It made me remember why I liked these books to begin with.
I think it was a good choice to have rotating narrators as the story actually moved along quickly, and it was refreshing to hear from some of the more mature characters. I actually liked Zoey again in this book, probably because we weren't forced to listen to pages of inner-monologue from her.
As a pleasant side note: The phrase "bull-poopie" is refreshingly sparse in this one.

Hungry Girl to the Max!: The Ultimate Guilt-Free Cookbook

Hungry Girl to the Max!: The Ultimate Guilt-Free Cookbook

I own all of the Hungry Girl cookbooks, and I was actually happy to see that this "Bible" has come out, I decided to purchase this book in Kindle format since it is filled with a lot of old favorites from the other books, (and some great new things that I can't wait to try ), making it much easier to take along to the grocery store. I am however a little disappointed on the way the index is set up, It would be nice to have links that would take me to all the recipes that I am looking for, for instance, I want to find recipes for Salmon, well if I look up salmon in the index, well yeah the word is there, but it is not linked to any of the salmon recipes, so I would still have to look in the table of contents to find any recipe with the word salmon in it, this takes up way to much time. I love the Picture section, if there is something that looks good, then just click on the picture and it takes you to the recipe, just wish there were pictures to all the recipes, but yeah that is asking to much, can you imagine 650 pictures! LOL, the book would be HUGE. Anyway I gave this book all 5 stars because it is Hungry Girl and she has Awesome Recipes! But I give the Kindle Format only 4 stars because of the index problem. If you don't have any of Hungry girl books yet, then this would be a GREAT one to start with, but if you already have some of her books, then this would be a Great one to have on the Kindle, no point in repeating it on hard copy. It has everything you need, the best of the best!

The Panther (John Corey)

The Panther (John Corey)

Admittedly, I am a long-time John Corey fan. I keep expecting the author to eventually run out of the smart-alec remarks that John Corey is famous for, but he just keeps 'em coming. In The Panther, John and his wife Kate are sent over to Yemen ("If the earth had an anus, it would be located in Yemen"), ostensibly for one purpose, but of course office politics within the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, FBI, and CIA quickly turn it into something entirely different and, of course, far more dangerous. Nelson DeMille's talent lies in maintaining the irreverent character of John Corey while simultaneously writing a tense, thriller plot. The story is fast-paced, which keeps the reader's attention, while experiencing laugh-out-loud moments when Corey makes his random observations ("But the problem, as I saw it when I was there, was that we had a very small American presence in a very hostile environment. A recipe for disaster. Ask General Custer about that.")

As usual, DeMille uses current Middle East events to fuel his plot. Given his character's ties to 9-11, he creates taut, believable (for those of us not in law enforcement, lol) scenarios that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you haven't read a John Corey novel, it's perfectly okay to start with this one. Just be prepared to want to go back and read all the previous ones! As long as DeMille keeps writing them like this, I'll be buying them.

3M Low-Maintenance Half-Mask Organic Vapor, P95 Respirator Assembly

3M Low-Maintenance Half-Mask Organic Vapor, P95 Respirator Assembly
3M Low-Maintenance Half-Mask Organic Vapor, P95 Respirator Assembly, Medium (R6211)
For the relative inexpensive cost of this respirator, you get the face mask, 2 orgainc vapor filters and 4 regular filters. All the components fit together very well. It took me about 10 minutes to get used to the face mask, then I hardly noticed that I was wearing it. The obstruction of vision is quite minimal. Protect your lungs and buy this respirator instead of using the ineffective surgical mask type of filters.

Howard Leight MAX1 Earplugs Uncorded NRR33 Box/200 Count
These are the best ear plugs I've ever used. Due to a medical condition, I have acutely sensitive hearing and have spent weeks at a time in the hospital. I literally am not able to sleep without them. These little guys are wonderful. Unlike the cylindical yellow competitors, the suface is smooth so my ears don't get sore. The shape is easy to insert, and makes it difficult to pierce your eardrum or just flat lose it in your ear.

MSA Safety Works 817691 Over Economical Safety Glasses
MSA Safety Works 817691 Over Economical Safety Glasses, Clear
Let's face it, you're wearing two pairs of glasses at the same time. There's very little hope of this being a super comfortable situation. However this particular product comes quite close to being unnoticeable, which I think is the goal. It fits nicely over my glasses, and seems very sturdy and protective. My face does get hot and sweaty while using them, but it has been a hot, sweaty summer, so I can let that slide. Considering that I'm looking through two layers of lenses, my vision is nice and clear, very much unimpaired. Combining these pros with the low price makes these glasses a very good buy in my book.

Howard Leight R-03318 Leightning L3 Shooter's Premium Earmuff
Howard Leight R-03318 Leightning L3 Shooter's Premium Earmuff
I purchased these earmuffs for ear protection while shooting my AR-15. They are ranked high for decibel protection, and got great reviews.
My experience of these earmuffs is mixed. They look great. They are super comfortable (though I have not worn them for extended periods of time). The sound dampening is incredible. They keep loud noises at a safe and tolerable level and simultaneously allow you to hear conversation, etc.
The problem I experienced was that they are too big to use functionally with a rifle! The head phones interfere with rifle placement when holding the rifle in a standard fashion, using a red dot scope for sights. Try as I might, including some funky positions, I could not avoid interference of the headphones with the stock of my gun. As a result, the headphones were pushed askew, my ear was uncomfortable, and the hearing protection in my right ear was negated some what.
Unfortunately, it's an instant deal breaker.
If I were going to use these for a handgun, I'd be giving them 5 stars. But since I am using them for a rifle, I cannot recommend them. If you don't anticipate on using a long gun, these are probably a safe bet. Again, they sound great and feel great. But if you plan on using a long gun, I'd recommend something with a smaller profile, or even ear-bud style protection.

Israeli Civilian Gas Mask with NBC NATO Filter and Drinking Hydration Tube

Israeli Civilian Gas Mask with NBC NATO Filter and Drinking Hydration Tube
Israeli Civilian Gas Mask with NBC NATO Filter and Drinking Hydration Tube
I was planning on spraying my house with some pretty toxic pesticides, so I needed a respirator. In the course of my searching, I found that this NBC protection gas mask is cheaper than any commercially sold respirator. I was a little worried that the mask might be defective given its exceedingly reasonable price, but I decided to put my life on the line for 10 bucks and went with the cheaper, cooler looking alternative.

The filter was shipped in a separate bag with an unbroken seal, which I figured bode well for my chances of survival. So I installed the filter, donned the gas mask, and began spraying chemicals. It's not the most comfortable device, but it did fit snugly over my face. The straps are adjustable so I assume it would work for any reasonably shaped human. The spraying took me almost 2 hours, during which the inside of the mask became rather hot and my face started sweating - but lo! I completed the job with not so much as lightheadedness, not to mention death.
