New moms
need a lot of love and support, and many of us like to show our love and
support by giving helpful gifts. Sometimes, though, you'd like to do something
beyond the normal baby registry gift or the baby super store gift card. At
times like these, a thoughtful gift basket can be a wonderful idea as a gift or
in addition to the registry gift you were planning.
I've been
to quite a few baby showers, and you can always tell when a mother is thrilled
with her gift. So I've put together some ideas to help you make sure the gift
basket you give is truly useful.
One of the
best ideas for a new mother's basket is to fill it with items she'll need for
her new baby, but are often forgotten in the rush to buy all the big "baby
equipment" pieces on the baby registry list. My absolute favorite thing to
add is comfy, all-natural baby socks. For some reason baby socks always seem to
get forgotten, and finding baby socks made from natural-fibers at major stores
is surprisingly hard. Choose solid color baby socks - whites and reds are good
to start with. You can also give yellows and blues or pinks depending on the
gender of the expected arrival. Once you find a store with good socks, buy
multiple pairs in differing sizes (keep them in the package). Like the baby
gift basket with these.
There are
plenty of common items you can load into the basket. Baby wash cloths, hooded
towels, and toys are common items. Find out if the mother is breastfeeding or
bottle feeding. If she's bottle feeding you can include a couple of bottles
(get the brands she's put on her registry). If she's breastfeeding you can add
a sippy cup, or you can add an extra cover for her nursing pillow. The Boppy
nursing pillow, a favorite of new moms, has many different covers that zip on
and off. The mom-to-be will really appreciate this because she can change the
covers quickly, throwing the wet one in the wash!
You can add
rolled up one-piece bodysuits in several sizes to the gift basket. The new
mother will probably get plenty of these in newborn size... but her baby is
going to be a lot bigger by the time he or she nears 12 months, and your
thoughtfulness in including larger size bodysuits will be appreciated.
Include
some receiving blankets. A new mom can never have too many of these. They can
be used as blankets, as a clean surface to put baby down (or to protect another
surface from baby!), and as burp cloths if needed. Another idea is a dozen
cloth diapers. Even if the mother intends to use disposable diapers, a dozen
cloth diapers can be used a burp cloths and to provide a clean, protective
surface under baby's head.
