First, remember that even if the couple is registered at every possible location in a ten square mile radius, you do not have to get something off of a gift registry. A registry is something a couple can do to give others an idea of what they might like or need. It does take the guess work out of purchasing a gift and can help to avoid getting a room full of bath towels. There is no doubt that your gift will be something the couple likes when you work off of a list. By no means does this limit you gift choices. It is a gift from you to the couple, your choice!
If going off of a registry is the perfect solution for you, go for it. Even if registry information is not included in an invitation, chances are the couple has a list going somewhere. Call a family member or someone involved in the wedding party. Most likely, they will have an idea where the couple is registered.
Third, do not be afraid to cut loose with some creativity. Wedding gifts can be fun and humorous. Be sure to keep your present in good taste, however!! Couples often enjoy items like a homemade gift basket full of items you know they like!
One good question is how much is an appropriate amount to spend on a wedding gift. Thankfully, there is no rule such as a three month salary, for wedding gifts. Decide what you can afford to spend and then stick to it. When buying a wedding gift, remember that now is not the time to cheep out. Resist the urge to recycle that bowl set that Mom bought you 5 years ago and that is still sitting in the box. Items go out of style and become outdated so spring for something people have registered for in recent history.
There is no shame in giving cash or gift cards. For couples who are setting up their first house, the list of needed items may be quite long. Gift cards and cash can provide a nice way to fill in any areas that were neglected by other gifts.
Depending on the couple and on your creativity, a personalized gift may be just the ticket. No matter how you decide what you would like to give (registry or not) you can make the gift personal. There are websites that provide ways to add unique aspects to all types of gifts. Take time to look up these sites and get some ideas on what is out there. You may be surprised by what can be personalized. Times have moved well beyond the glasses with a wedding date and names engraved on it. If you want to make sure that bath towels are not neglected, look into get them monogrammed. Search out ways to make the gift something special from you!
