But its
more complicated than just that. My cousin gets insulted by gift cards no
matter what. If it was ten bucks, then the person who gave the present was
being cheap; "What - am I not worth more?!" If it happens to be
seventy five dollars then its even worse, because then she feels that you now
expect her to spend that much on yourself. So she resents you for putting her
under obligation. No matter what the amount is, you cannot win with her. Either
its too little or it commands too great a return. Of course, the same is when
someone gives her a check or cash gift.
So
therefore, some people never give gift cards, because people can always find
fault with that. However, other gifts have value in that it represents
something that can make their life happier, and not just in their monetary
worth. Therefore, the dollar amount is not as important.
Is my
cousin completely normal? No, normal people are just happy that someone thought
of them, gift card, cash or earrings. But there enough non-normal people
around, these fine times. It may be prudent to spend the extra five minutes and
buy a real gift.
